MOUNTED CARABINIERI DISPLAY

On Sunday evening, at the end of the fourth day of competition, the sound of a trumpet attracts public attention: it is the fanfare trumpet of the mounted Carabinieri regiment that announces the beginning of the Carousel.

The show is renovated every year and has a magical atmosphere. It has its roots in the ancient medieval tournaments where riders demonstrated their ability duelling to death.
The Mounted Carabinieri Display has closed the International Horse Show in Piazza di Siena for more than sixty years.

Its debut in the Villa Borghese Arena, that became its traditional stage, dates back to 1933, when the Carabinieri were celebrating the 119th anniversary of their foundation.
This is a harmonic system of great ability and courageous tests where a group of 145 horses, half grey and half chesnut, make a series of evolutions in order to bring back to life the traditions of the mounted Carabinieri, culminating in a thrilling final charge. This celebrates the charge of Pastrengo (April 30th 1848), when the result of one of the battles of the Italian Wars of Independence was decided by three squadrons of mounted Carabinieri.

In 1953, during the Fête International du Cheval in Paris, a small group representing the mounted Carabinieri was invited for a short display. It was a triumph! Since that moment, their show takes place in many European countries as well as in the most important Italian sites.

Since 1963, when the Mounted Regiment was created, the classic formation of the Carousel has been enriched with the regimental Fanfare which has replaced the small number of trumpeters that, until that moment, opened the parades.

Since 1995 the Carousel became much more spectacular: it is carried out at night time, at the end of the Grand Prix Rome Prize-giving ceremony.
